Education has afforded me many opportunities in life that I might not have had otherwise. I believe my experience is not unique, that education can be empowering for anyone who is willing to commit themselves to learning a body of knowledge, exploring new concepts, and discovering different ways of seeing the world. As a teacher I desire to provide my students with a meaningful learning experience. What they learn in the classroom should be relevant to them, should enrich them personally, and should be of some benefit to them outside the walls of a university. Recognizing that most students attend college with the primary goal of advancing their career prospects, I try to meet them where they are by explaining how what we do in the classroom will help their personal and professional development. The belief that courses should provide students with new skills and knowledge beneficial to all facets of their life is foundational to my views on teaching and informs the manner in which I design and conduct my courses. To that end, most of my courses incorporate active learning, often in the form of interactive lectures, in-class activities, role-playing simulations, applied research projects, and team-based presentations.
